This video shows how I self transfer from my manual chair in to my bed indepndently using my banana board.
I have no active tricep muscles, only shoulder and biceps with very limited core strength or movement below my chest.
This transfer requires alot of practice and with time it has become easier. It is very difficult lifting my legs in. Different footwear and clothing affect transfers so keep this in mind!
Other factors such different shape and different material banana board, sliding sheets, hand rails can help with this movement. It is about finding what works for you. This wheelchair transfer board from Beasy has a swivel seat that can rotate 360 degrees and runs along a track in the board so it can move position allowing for the easiest of transfers. t is designed to minimise shear pressure so reduces the chance of injury and friction which is always a plus with a spinal cord injury!
I’m happy I can make the transfer but unfortunately still not strong enough to take my chair apart and lift it in but I am working on it.
I recommend having someone present for a long time until you feel safe making the transfer alone. You should always have a backup plan as falls Do happen; whether its a safety button on a watch or some means of notifying someone in the event an accidenthappens.
